Beaufort Waterfront Park Promenade Closure: What's Open in Fall 2026
The riverfront promenade remains closed, but the park, Day Dock, downtown dining and seasonal events continue. Here's what visitors should know.
For generations, Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park has been a gathering place in downtown Beaufort, South Carolina. Its riverfront walkway, open lawns and proximity to Bay Street make it a favorite for locals and visitors alike.
Since June 30, 2025, however, the waterfront promenade has been closed because of structural safety concerns. The rebuilding process is complex, and no confirmed reopening date has been announced.
Important: Waterfront Park itself is not entirely closed. Visitors can still enjoy designated open park areas, nearby downtown businesses and community events.
Quick Take: What's Open?
- Park lawns and open grounds: Accessible outside restricted areas
- Waterfront swings: Available in accessible park areas
- Day Dock: Reopened July 15, 2026, via a temporary gangway
- Promenade: Closed for structural safety reasons
- Bay Street: Restaurants and shops continue operating independently
- Reopening date: Not yet confirmed
Why Is Beaufort's Waterfront Promenade Closed?
The City of Beaufort closed the promenade on June 30, 2025, following an engineering assessment of the relieving platform beneath the riverside walkway. Engineers identified significant structural deficiencies and determined that the promenade was unsafe for pedestrian use.
The closure applies to the riverside platform—not every part of the park. In a July 2025 public notice, the City confirmed that other open areas of Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park could continue to be used safely.

What Is the Plan to Rebuild the Promenade?
During 2026, the City and its consultants presented design concepts and gathered public feedback about restoring the riverfront walkway. The preferred approach discussed publicly has focused on rebuilding the promenade while considering higher elevation and long-term resilience.
Design selection is only one step. The project still involves detailed engineering, permitting, funding and eventual construction procurement. A design-team selection was anticipated in October 2026, but an award should not be treated as confirmed until the City announces it.
How Much Could the Work Cost?
Reported planning estimates have placed the project in approximately the $60 million to $80 million range, with an earlier construction estimate of about $66.5 million. These are estimates, not an approved final construction price. The cost and schedule may change as design and funding plans develop.
When Will the Promenade Reopen?
There is no confirmed reopening date. Design, engineering, permitting and construction could take multiple years, depending on funding and project decisions. Readers should follow the City of Beaufort for official milestones rather than assuming a particular reopening year.
What Can You Still Use at Waterfront Park?
Open Lawns and Park Grounds
Accessible green spaces remain available outside the fenced promenade area. Visitors can still enjoy the downtown waterfront atmosphere and nearby Bay Street destinations.
Waterfront Swings
The City installed additional swings facing the river during 2026, providing a place to sit and enjoy the waterfront while the promenade remains closed.
The Day Dock
The City officially announced the Day Dock's reopening on July 15, 2026. A temporary gangway crosses the promenade solely to provide access to the dock. It does not authorize pedestrian access to the closed walkway. Boaters should confirm current conditions before arriving.
See the official Day Dock reopening announcement.
The Promenade
The promenade itself remains closed. Do not cross the barriers or use the temporary gangway as a route onto the restricted walkway.
Where Can You Enjoy Downtown Beaufort's Waterfront?
The promenade closure has not closed Bay Street. Downtown Beaufort continues to offer restaurants, galleries, shops and historic architecture.
- Saltus River Grill, 802 Bay Street: A downtown dining destination associated with outdoor seating and Beaufort River views. Check its website for current service details.
- Panini's on the Waterfront, 926 Bay Street: A waterfront dining option near the park. Confirm operating hours and outdoor seating directly.
- Plums, 904 Bay Street: A longstanding Bay Street restaurant near the waterfront. Ask about available seating and views.
Restaurant hours and patio access may change. Contact each business before planning around a particular seating arrangement.
Remembering Hemingway's Bistro
Hemingway's Bistro, a familiar downtown Beaufort gathering place, closed on September 28, 2026, after 32 years. Its connection to Waterfront Park made it part of many visitors' downtown experiences.
The closure is a notable local-business change, but the promenade project should not be described as the established cause of the restaurant's closing without supporting evidence.

Events continue in the open areas of the park and throughout downtown. Main Street Beaufort currently lists the following dates:
