Sea Pines' Fall Calendar Runs Through the Forest Preserve This Year

On Deer Island Road, a temporary traffic signal now holds cars at the bridge to Lighthouse Road. On Mizzenmast Lane, the stormwater drainage work moved into the roadway in late September, and the CSA is warning drivers about delays and detours. Across the plantation, a new one-mile trail has been open since May, and most of the season's outdoor events are planned for the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

That's the shape of fall 2026 in Sea Pines. The road work is on the Harbour Town end, and the calendar points to the Preserve. Several of the Preserve's events also raise money to maintain the Preserve, so going to them helps pay for the boardwalks.

What's under construction near Harbour Town, and until when

None of this is a surprise if you read the Sea Pines CSA updates. Put the projects side by side, though, and you can see how much of the Harbour Town end is affected this season.

  • Deer Island Bridge. The CSA is excavating and replacing the bridge that connects Deer Island Road to Lighthouse Road. The project started in early September and is expected to run through December 2026. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sheet piling was scheduled to begin Monday, September 28, and the CSA warned of delays of about 15 to 20 minutes that week. Cyclists must get off and walk their bikes around active work zones.
  • Lighthouse Lane Phase 4. This phase covers Lighthouse Lane, Mizzenmast Lane, Windjammer Court, Mizzenmast Court and Genoa Court. It runs from early September 2026 to early spring 2027 and includes overnight dewatering pumps. Owners, guests and service providers in the marked areas have to use temporary parking during working hours through the end of 2026. Cars left in driveways overnight must be moved by 7 a.m. The area has already had one planned water outage on September 22 and an unplanned one on September 28.
  • Beach Lagoon pedestrian bridge #31. The old timber footbridge between West Beach Lagoon Road and South Beach Lagoon Road is closed for replacement. The CSA estimates the work will take 4 to 8 weeks and says it won't affect car traffic.

If you live on Deer Island or near Lighthouse Lane and have a moving truck, a large furniture delivery or contractor work scheduled this fall, the CSA asks you to call Sea Pines Security at 843.671.7170 first so they can approve it and coordinate traffic.

There's more work ahead for Harbour Town. The Sea Pines Resort's planned overhaul of The Inn & Club at Harbour Town is expected to start in 2027 and finish in late 2028 or early 2029.

The new trail that started at Fish Island

Miner's Mile is the newest trail in the Forest Preserve, a one-mile leisure trail dedicated to the late Charles "Charlie" Miner. Part of its cost was covered by an ATAX grant from the Town of Hilton Head Island. The opening on Friday, May 8 started at Fish Island with remarks from Sea Pines CSA President and CEO Sam Bennett. The group then walked to the trailhead for a sign reveal and vine cutting. Some people rode bikes on the trail and others walked, and afterward everyone came back to the Fish Island Pavilion for hot dogs from The Salty Dog Cafe.

If you haven't walked it yet, Fish Island is the easiest place to start. That's where the opening day began, and it sits between the Warner W. Plahs Wildflower Field and Lake Joe. Its loop trail leads to a covered pavilion with picnic tables, running water and portable restrooms. For the trailhead's exact spot, the CSA points readers to the Sea Pines Forest Preserve map.

Once you're past the wildflower field, a few older spots are worth the walk in cooler weather:

  • Vanishing Swamp, a boardwalk through quiet forest where the surface water rises and falls with the seasons.
  • The Sea Pines Shell Ring, a site on the National Register that is about 4,800 years old. The shell mound is nearly 200 feet across and only a few feet high, and it's a short walk from the driving entrance.
  • Old Lawton Rice Field, described as an 18th-century rice field. Its longer trail has boardwalks and observation decks, and Lawton Stables nearby offers guided horseback rides in the Preserve.

Where the fall calendar lands

Look at the Sea Pines Resort's fall guide and you'll see the outdoor events from late October through Thanksgiving week keep returning to the Preserve, to Heritage Farm beside Lawton Stables, and to Fish Island. Here are the dates in order:

  1. Wednesday, October 21: Heritage Farm Dinner. An evening dinner at Heritage Farm with a multi-course menu built on local harvest ingredients, Robert Mondavi wines or select beers, and live music.
  2. Throughout October: Halloween Wagon Rides. The resort lists the wagon rides with its Halloween events this month. The ride takes a spooky route around the Preserve, and costumes are encouraged. Halloween on the Harbour on October 25, 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., is the Harbour Town counterpart.
  3. Sunday, November 1: Hilton Head Half & Quarter Marathon & 5K. The race starts and finishes in Harbour Town, and the course runs through the Sea Pines Forest Preserve. The race page also lists Sea Pines leisure paths on the route. No trail closures have been announced for race day, so if you usually walk the Preserve on Sunday mornings, expect runners.
  4. Friday, November 13: the Sea Pines Forest Preserve Foundation's 15th Annual Bonfire. It runs 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the Preserve, with cocktails, Lowcountry food, live music and the bonfire. Tickets were scheduled to go on sale in October. The 2026 price hasn't been posted yet.
  5. Friday, November 27: Caramel Apple Festival and the 23rd Annual Fall Fishing Tournament. The Caramel Apple Festival at Heritage Farm runs 1 to 3 p.m., with seasonal treats, crafts and games. That morning, the Fishing Tournament at Fish Island runs 10 to 11:30 a.m. for bass, bream and catfish. The tournament requires reservations.

If family is visiting for Thanksgiving, that Friday is one easy day in a single part of the Preserve, with fishing at Fish Island in the morning and caramel apples at Heritage Farm after lunch. You can do both without going near the Lighthouse Lane work.

Three of those dates pay for the Preserve

The Preserve itself is free to enter. Several of its fall events help keep it that way.

Bonfire proceeds go to capital replacement projects throughout the Preserve, the kind of work boardwalks and observation decks eventually need. The race page says the Half & Quarter Marathon benefits the Sea Pines Forest Preserve Foundation and Turtle Trackers of Hilton Head, and that the Sea Pines Community Fund will match donations. Proceeds from the Heritage Farm dinner support the farm's future harvests.

Public money helped too. Miner's Mile was partly funded through an ATAX grant with the Town of Hilton Head Island. So a resident who buys a Bonfire ticket in October is helping pay for future capital replacements in a Preserve where the newest trail was built partly with a town grant.

The rules for a fall visit

The Preserve is open every day from dawn to dusk. You can come on foot, by bike or by car, but bikes aren't allowed on the walking trails. Dogs must be leashed. Swimming, smoking and open fires are prohibited, and the Bonfire is the one sanctioned exception. Shorter days matter, too. By the week of the Caramel Apple Festival, dusk comes early, so an after-work walk on Miner's Mile needs an earlier start than it did in June.

The stocked fishing lakes are for Sea Pines property owners, their guests and resort guests, and minnow bait is not allowed. The Preserve's own FAQ and the newer CSA fishing page give different answers on who needs a permit. If you're bringing grandkids to the tournament or to Lake Joe, check with the CSA before you go.

For construction updates, the CSA keeps its pages current. As of September 28, the Lighthouse Lane page was still adding notes about outages. Those updates are posted at seapinesliving.com/lighthouselane and on the Deer Island Bridge project page.
